Free speech enables individuals to express themselves and thereby create their own identify — and, in the process perhaps, find kindred spirits. Freedom of speech thus becomes an aspect of human dignity, human agency and autonomy.
When talking about the eight values of free expression one that is inspiring, impactful and meaningful is the individual self fulfillment period. “Free speech enables individuals to express themselves and thereby create their own identify — and, in the process perhaps, find kindred spirits. Freedom of speech thus becomes an aspect of human dignity, human agency and autonomy” I believe freedom of speech is important because it allows for the idea of many different perspectives, these perspectives allow individuals to develop and process certain ideas that allow them to speak and think however they want freely. Because people are given this opportunity it gives them a second voice and a public opinion. No two people in the world are the same and everyone has different views and opinions regarding different topics. Using the right of having freedom of speech helps those to be educated on other peoples point of view. Taking from the article Self Fulfillment Theory of Free Speech by Rodney A. Smolla Professor C. Edwin Baker explains more on the theory “ Speech is protected not as a means of a collective good but because of the value of speech conduct to the individual” I think this quote means that the Freedom of Speech comes with a right to be unapologetically you and to speak whatever is on your mind. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, your freedom of speech is protected by your first amendment rights.
